You should never give any personal information out on this blog. Use first name and last initial only. For this a simple "I saw it." comment is fine. Future comments may be questions or advice or answers for others. Polite and helpful comments only. Post a comment here by Friday, September 18th. We are on a varied schedule right now and will begin peer reviews this week. If you do not have an idea yet, please start brainstorming.
If you have a plan, please print it before Friday. I am happy to announce that two students have already been approved and several others are on the way. Thank you to all for your hard work and planning.
To all students, remember, you are never locked in to a project. If you want to change it, you just need to contact me first. You can reach me through out summer through a blog comment or via email at mevans@royred,org. If you are sharing a Google Doc, I prefer you share it with this address: [email protected]. Thanks and happy experimenting! Be safe! By now most of you have purchased a log book, picked a topic, asked a question, done your research, created 5 or more citations, written your hypothesis, and highlighted the important parts of the articles. Now it is time to begin creating the rest of your plan.
See the Plan Help page on this website for the details of what needs to be included in your plan. 6th grade: Start by creating a Microsoft Word document 7th grade: Start by creating a Google Docs document It should be titled: Science Fair 2016 your name Plan Include the Question, Hypothesis, and Citations (at the end) under the heading References Add all the other pieces in between and in the correct order such as Rationale, Materials, Procedures, etc. The GOAL DATE if you plan to work on the experiment over summer is Wednesday, May 27, 2015 so it can go through the committee. Remember you will need all of your forms as well. The DUE DATE for the plan for all is Friday, May 29, 2015. Forms are only needed if you plan to send it through the committee for approval at this time. If you have questions or comments, please post them below. Remember to comment to the newest postings and not to earlier ones unless otherwise stated. Below you will find the e-mail I just sent to parents.
You may want to read it, too. :) Mrs. Evans One note card allowed. Try not to use it, but if there are things you are having trouble remembering like definitions or numbers from results, you may prepare one note card to help you. ***Tomorrow students may bring all their materials on the list below. Why did I change my mind? I fear several will be up late watching the OSU, game and I really don't want them to forget to bring something on Tuesday. They may set-up boards downstairs by the music room. The tables should be set-up by 8:30 a.m. tomorrow. All other materials may be stacked neatly on my counter so they do not get smashed in lockers. The students are responsible for bringing them to the fair on Tuesday, as I cannot carry that much stuff myself. ;) It was great working with most of you via the website and e-mail this weekend. I hope I answered all your questions. I am going to take a break for a couple hours and get my plans ready for tomorrow as they have to be changed due to the snow days. I will check back around 9 PM to see if there are any last minute questions. I have seen some great work and I am very excited for Tuesday! Thanks for working so hard! :) Mrs. Evans All Monday science classes will be work sessions and science fair prep. Don’t forget to bring your jump drive if you need to print something.
· To make titles and print things for your board: Do a “save as” and give it a new “file name.” Then, change things to a larger size and maybe center them so it is readable and looks nice from a few feet away. For the main title 1-2 inch letters are good. (Try font size 125 or larger) For headings try a font between 60 and 72 (or whatever you think looks good as many fonts are different sizes). The smallest font I would use for the body of explanations on your board would be 16, but you can go larger if it will fit on your board. Keep it neat and use GLUE not tape. · Include a data table. Very easy to make on Microsoft Word. Go to the insert tab. Click table and select the number of columns and rows by running over them with the mouse and clicking once you have the right amount highlighted. To make more rows or columns or delete some after it is made, click somewhere in the table with the right mouse button and click insert or whatever you need. · Use a smart phone or digital camera to take photos and use the digital version to paste or insert it into your paper. You can also print them in color at school to put on your board. · Put your name on your board. · You can bring your board on Monday if it is complete. Due to the size, all gluing and assembly should take place at home. · LOG BOOK – If you have not made many entries, do it now! It should be a record of thoughts, plans, data and results, conclusions, etc. basically everything that leads up to the report. Each entry should be dated. Be honest with dates. You don’t get points off for having several on the same day, just if important things are missing or there are no dates. I will be available today again, all day returning comments as soon as possible. I will also check comments over the weekend, but with less frequency.
If you missed the last post, please read it for details. Look for a summary of tips post later today. Finished reports may be emailed to me to give me that jump on grading. Thanks and stay safe today. Cover exposed skin if you plan to go outside. Yesterday I gave God all the credit (as He deserves) but today I also want to share that school is closed today due an enormous amount of scientific information from weather prediction tests, as well as experiments and historic data analysis of the affects of extreme cold weather on human skin, lungs, and organs. Think about all the science that goes into the decision for a snow day or a too cold day! :) Dear Students,
Tomorrow is a snow day (Thursday) BUT I will be available to you ALL DAY via this blog for science fair help. Post all new comments HERE if you have questions. I am also willing to do phone conferences if anyone is confused or needs help that is easier to verbally explain. If needed: post first name, last initial and "please call me," and I will. I fully believe that God has given many of you a gift in this snow day of the time you may need to finish your report (as only two students have turned in a report so far). Please work on it tomorrow and use this time well. Science Fair is next Tuesday, January 13, 2015, all students in 6th-8th grade need to bring: Finished Tri-fold display board Final Science Fair typed report Three copies of your Abstract with name and title at the top Your copy of your plan Log Book All Highlighted Articles Any signed copies of Human consent forms (may not apply) (You should also wear your best school uniform on that day. Don't forget your belt, and make sure your shoes are with-in school dress code.) Please ask a parent to help by proof reading your report. (After anyone has looked at the same information for so long, you need a pair of "fresh eyes" to look it over.) Trifold boards can be dropped off Monday morning and set-up. Please bring all other items on Tuesday. Finished reports will be accepted early this Friday if they are ready so I can get a jump on grading. They are not due until Tuesday, but if your report is ready early, please turn it in as the end of the quarter is a week from Friday, and I would appreciate the chance to grade some early this weekend. Also, most of the things you should put on your board can be copied from your report, enlarged and printed at school on Friday. Due to the snow day...ALL SCIENCE TESTS ON FRIDAY ARE Postponed until the end of next week. We will have a last minute science fair Q&A and work session instead. And don't forget that Friday is a dress down day - spirit wear and jeans! Blessings for a safe, warm and productive snow day! Mrs. Evans There are 4 more links on the RRSD Links page to help with graphs. One graph generator, directions by me on how to use it for a scatter plot, and two sites that help you decide which type of graph is best for your project. Let me know if you have questions. You are not required to use this generator. You may use other generators found on-line, other software like Excel or you may draw them EXTREMELY neatly by hand. (Hint: use a straight edge if you do it by hand.)
